PRODUCTION OF ACETYLATED MALIC ACID ANHYDRIDE COMPOSITION

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a high-purity acetylated malic acid anhydride composition useful as an intermediate for synthesizing a malic acid derivative by using a catalyst for a reaction between malic acid and acetic anhydride and producing the acetylated malic acid composition at a relatively low temperature. SOLUTION: A four-neck flask of 1 liter equipped with a stirrer, a thermometer and a reflux pipe is charged with 306 g (3 mol) acetic anhydride and 0.1 g sulfuric acid and with 201 g (1.5 mol) malic acid with stirring for 30 minutes while keeping the reaction temperature at 50 deg.C. After the addition of the reagents, aging is carried out at 50 deg.C for two hours.
