PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent boiling of water in a heat-exchange can body when dry burning operation is effected and to reliably remove a tar content adhered to a vaporizer and a fuel feed route. SOLUTION: This combustion device comprises a vaporizer 20 to vaporize liquid fuel; a vaporization heater 22 to heat the vaporizer 20; and a burner 23 to heat water in a heat exchange can body 10 by burning vaporized fuel. In this case, when a water temperature in the heat exchange can body 10 is reduced to a given temperature, dry burning operation is effected to hold the temperature of the vaporizer 20 at a dry burning temperature higher than the temperature during normal combustion by the vaporization heater 22.
