Lubricant additives are prepared by reacting polyisobutenyl succinic anhydride (the polyisobutenyl radical having a M.W. of 850 or 50,000) with one of the following:-tetra(trimethylene) pentamine, hexa(tetramethylene)heptamine, ammonia, a mixture of anthranilic acid and octadecamethylene diamine, a C12- 14 tert.-alkyl primary amine mixture, aminoguanidine bicarbonate, aminopropyl octadecylamine, di - n - butylamine, hydrazine hydrate, N,Ndibutyl thiourea, di(hexamethylene)diamine, N-octyl thiourea, oleylamide, 1,3-diphenylguanidine, octadecamidine, guanylurea, N-decyltrimethylene diamine and N-(2-ethylhexyl) trimethylene diamine (see Examples 1-18).ALSO:Lubricating compositions comprise a major proportion of a lubricating oil and, as additives, (I) 0.1-10 wt. per cent of a compound prepared by reacting (i) a substantially hydrocarbon-substituted succinic acid or the anhydride, halide or ester corresponding thereto, wherein the substantially hydrocarbon substituent has at least 50 aliphatic carbon atoms, with (ii) at least 0.5 equivalent of a nitrogen-containing compound having a radical of the structural configuration <FORM:1121681/C4-C5/1> wherein the two remaining valencies on the nitrogen atom are satisfied by radicals selected from hydrogen, hydrocarbon, amino-substituted hydrocarbon containing at least 11 aliphatic carbon atoms and having at least 3 carbon atoms separating successive amino groups, hydroxyalkylamino-substituted hydrocarbon, hydroxy- or alkoxy-substituted hydrocarbon, amino, thiocarbamyl, guanyl and acylimidoyl; and (II) either or both of (a) 0.001-2 wt. per cent (measured as phosphorus) of an oil-soluble Group II metal phosphorodithioate or adduct thereof with up to 0.75 mole of an epoxide, or (b) 0.05-10 wt. per cent (measured as sulphate ash) of an oil-soluble metal dispersant selected from alkaline earth metal salts of sulphonic acids, alkylphenols, and phosphorus acids derived from polymers of C2- 30 olefins. Component (I) is also defined by wording different from that given above. The lubricating oil may be mineral, animal, vegetable or synthetic, e.g. didodecyl adipate and di-(2-ethylhexyl)-sebacate.ALSO:Lubricant additives are prepared by reacting Group II metal phosphorodithioate diesters with up to 0.75 moles of an epoxide. Numerous epoxides are mentioned, and an example describes the reaction of zinc dioctylphosphorodithioate with 0.5 moles of propylene oxide. |
