PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce power consumption by effectively utilizing regenerative power, eliminating the necessity of a regenerating resistor, and avoiding a switching loss of a self-arc extinguishing element, in a variable speed type escalator device formed so as to supply AC power of variable voltage and variable frequency to an electric motor. SOLUTION: This constitution is provided with a first power converter 9 converting AC power into DC power by using a self-arc extinguishing element, second power converter 10 converting an output of the power converter 9 into AC power of variable voltage and variable frequency, smoothing capacitor 11 interposed between both of these power converters 9, 10, electric motor 3 with power fed from the second converter 10, footstep 8 driven by the electric motor 3, regenerative operation decision device 12 deciding whether regenerative power is generated or not from the electric motor 3, and a control processing circuit 15 making the first power converter 9 perform operation feeding back the regenerative power, when it is decided being generated, to an AC power source and perform operation of a diode rectifier when the regenerative power is decided not being generated.
