<p>Refining is effected by re-smelting the metal or alloy under an electrically conductive slag bath by the effect of Joule heat, the reaction elements being fed into the metal bath through the slag bath. On passing through the slag bath, the reaction elements are protected against contact with it. Pref. on using pulverulent reaction elements, the particles are coated with Ni, Fe or Co powder.
