PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic camera which is one having a photographing refractive optical system provided with an optical axis conversion means and capable of reducing the size and the thickness of the electronic camera without damaging the handleability. SOLUTION: This electronic camera is provided with a nearly flat armored casing 10 and a photographing refractive optical system 26 is arranged in the central part of the armored casing 10. The refractive optical system 26 is provided with an optical axis 01 on an object light side and a second optical axis 02 on an image pickup element side being orthogonal to the optical axis 01, the optical axis 01 is held in nearly perpendicular to the front surface 10a of the armored casing 10 and the optical axis 02 is held in nearly parallel with the front surface 10a. Then, notched parts 28a and 29a are provided on incorporated electrical circuit boards 28 and 29, the refractive optical system 26 is arranged in the notched parts 28a and 29a and further, a battery housing chamber 2d is disposed on the side of the refractive optical system 26.
