PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data base retrieval system which can be applied to an object oriented data base and uses a retrieval engine retrieving picture data. SOLUTION: A retrieval condition analysis means 207 discriminates whether index information corresponding to retrieval object data is contained in an index file storage part 301 used in retrieval by a retrieval engine 205 by an index management means 206, and segments only a retrieval condition from a retrieval condition sentence as a retrieval condition clause. A retrieval engine access means 202 transfers the segmented retrieval condition clause to the retrieval engine 205, and the index management means 206 converts a data base object identifier into a corresponding index identifier and transfers it to the retrieval engine 205. The retrieval engine 205 executes retrieval by using information of the index file storage part 301 and returns a retrieval result to a retrieval engine access means 202 as the index identifier.
