PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively prevent a plasma display panel from being cracked in whatever pattern a still image is displayed on the panel. SOLUTION: The average luminance level of an image signal, which is inputted in a plasma display panel by a circuit 38 for calculating the average luminance level, is detected for each vertical scanning period, with a difference determined between the average luminance level thus detected and that detected immediately before. In this case, when this determined difference in the average luminance level is smaller than a reference value continuously for a prescribed time, it is discriminated as a still image display, with the number of sustained pulse reduced or the multiplication coefficient made smaller, so that the luminance is decreased for the image to be displayed.
