PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an element with high luminescent characteristics at low voltage, high stability, and long life by using an aromatic methylidene compound as a luminescent material. SOLUTION: An aromatic methylidene compound represented by formula is used in an organic electroluminescent element. In the formula, Ar1 represents a divalent to hexavalent non-substituted or substituted aromatic hydrocarbon residue, or a divalent to hexavalent non-substituted or substituted aromatic heterocyclic hydrocarbon residue. Ar2 represents a divalent non-substituted or substituted aromatic heterocyclic hydrocarbon residue. Ar3 represents a non-substituted or substituted aromatic hydrocarbon residue or a non-substituted or substituted heterocyclic hydrocarbon residue. R1-R4 represent hydrogen (excluding the case where R1, R2, R3, and R4 are hydrogen at the same time), a non- substituted or substituted alkyl group, cyano group, a non-substituted or substituted aromatic hydrocarbon residue, or a non-substituted or substituted aromatic heterocyclic hydrocarbon residue. Ar3 and Ar4 may jointly form a ring. (n) is an integer of 1-6.
