PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reader for pressurizing an original to a read sensor, while appropriately carrying it and reading the images of high quality. SOLUTION: In this reader 1, the original mounted on an original platen 13 is separated sheet by sheet by a separation roller 8 and a separation pad 10 and carried on an original guide 14 to an R1 roller 3, the R1 roller 3 and a counter roller 5 carry the original to a contact sensor 2, and when an S2 sensor 12 detects the tip of the original, a timing is adjusted and it is carried to the contact sensor 2. When the original is carried onto the contact glass 2b of the contact sensor 2, both end parts of the original are carried, while being pressurized to the contact glass 2b by a belt-like elastic body provided on an original width guide. When the tip of the original reaches an R2 roller 4, the image of the original is read by the contact sensor 2, while the original is carried by the R2 roller 4 and the counter roller 6. Thus, the original is carried without generating a jamming or the like while being pressurized to the contact sensor 2, and the image of the original is read with high quality.
