PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve reliability and to reduce a manufacturing cost by providing a floppy disk device in which the kind of medium discriminating signal and an index signal are superimposed and transmitted by the same signal line. SOLUTION: This device is constituted by a media kind discriminating means discriminating a kind of a medium 4 inserted into a floppy disk device, an index signal detecting means detecting a physical start position of a rotational direction of the medium 4, a signal superimposing means superimposing an index signal outputted from the index signal detecting means on a medium kind discriminating signal outputted from the medium kind discriminating means and sending out it to a control circuit through one signal line 3, and a separating means provided in the control circuit and separating an input signal inputted from the signal line 3 to a medium kind discriminating signal and an index signal. Therefore, as a medium kind discriminating signal and an index signal can be transmitted through one signal line 3, the number of wirings can be reduced to half.
