PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To definitely detect whether a magnetic head and respective peripheral parts which are to be connected to the head and a current supplying circuit are normal or not. SOLUTION: When a magnetic card 11 is inserted in this magnetic card reader and writer, a CPU 21 transports the card 11 and also successively applies 2F data to a current supplying circuit 22 before transported magnetic head reaches the position of a magnetic head 23 to control the energizing of the write coil 23A of the head 23. Consequently, the magnetic field generated by the controlling of the energizing of the coil 23A is transmitted to the side of the read coil 23B of the head and voltages are induced in the read coil. The waveforms of the induced voltages of the read coil 23B are shaped in a read circuit 24 to be outputted as read bits to the CPU 21, which counts the number of read bits and when the count value is equal to or larger than a predetermine stipulated value, it judges that respective circuits of the recording system and the reading system of the reader and writer including the magnetic head are normal.
