PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL element having advantages of both an organic material and an inorganic material, a long life, improved efficiency, low operating voltage, and a practical use especially for a high-quality flat color display. SOLUTION: This organic EL element has a hole injection electrode 2 and an electron injection electrode 3 on a substrate 1, and an organic layer 5 taking part in at least luminescent function between the electrodes 2, 3. Also, the organic EL element has an inorganic electron injection layer 4 which contains lanthanum oxide or that to which at least one of a stable component and a work function regulating component are added, between the electron injection electrode 3 and the organic layer 5.
