PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the processable range of by reducing the limit of a clear area at the top end part of the slip. SOLUTION: A white bar 101 is attached to a reading area, and at the time of judging the amplification factor of the output of a CCD line sensor 22, the white bar 101 is set at the first position where is irradiated with an illumination light. The output value of a reflected light from the white bar 101 obtained from the CCD line sensor 22 in this state is used as a white reference so that the amplification factor of the CCD line sensor 22 can be adjusted. At the time of reading a document 11, the white bar 101 is returned to a non-illuminated second position so as to be separated from the reading area. Then, the backing of the document reading is turned black so that the reading of the slip 11 can be attained without being affected by the white bar 101.
