PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader and an image read method capable of accurately obtaining brightness correction data without accompanying complicated work. SOLUTION: This image reader is provided with a turret 36 provided with balance filters for a negative film and for a positive film, and at obtaining of the brightness correction data, the turret 36 is controlled so as to insert a balance filter for the positive film onto an optical axis L of the emitted light of a lamp 32, and the brightness correction data are prepared based on image data outputted from a line CCD 116 in a state in which setting a photographic film 22 is not set to a film carrier 38. At reading of the image of the photographic film 22, the balance filter for the negative film in the case that the photographic film 22 is a negative film and the balance filter for the positive film in the case that it is the positive film are respectively inserted onto the optical axis L and brightness correction is performed on the image data inputted from the line CCD 116 by using the brightness correction data.
