PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the influence by a recording phenomenon at the time of a recording erasure and to improve erasing efficiency by setting the width of a center core having first and second gaps for erasing the record on both sides at a length above specific times and below specific times the recording wavelength. SOLUTION: The recording of a magnetic head 1 is erased by passing of a magnetic tap 1 through a magnetic field for erasing of the first gap 4 and a magnetic field on the center core 5 of a width (h) and further for erasing of the second gap 6. At this time, the signal remaining without being erased in the first gap 4 is picked up as a magnetic flux from a first gap edge 7 and is recorded on the magnetic tape 1 with the erasing magnetic field from the second gap edge 8 as a bias through he inside of the center core 5. The width (h) of the center core 5 is set at integer times +>=1/4 and integer times +<=3/4 the recording wavelength in such a manner that the signal remaining without being erased is made into opposite-phase from the signal of recording, by which the degradation in the erasure rate by the recording phenomenon may be obviated.
