PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an reaser realizing an erasing method capable of an erasure by a low power consumption and the setting of an optimum erasing current in which states of a head and a tape are considered in erasing the signal recorded on a magnetic recording medium. SOLUTION: In an eraser detecting an erasing current capable of erasing the signal recorded on a magnetic recording medium at a maximum in which the dip phenomenon of an overwite characteristic is generated in order to erase the signal and erasing the signal with this erasing current, the erasing of the signal is performed by changing an erasing current from an erasing current generating 4 in step shapes in an erasing current setting circuit 5 to supply them to an erasing head on a track 1 being in a standstill state and moreover, a residual recorded signal is measured in a reproduced output measuring circuit 9 as the reproduced signal level of a reproducing head and an erasing current capable of erasing the residual recorded signal maximumly is detected and set.
