The utensil comprises a thin metal disc (1) with a flat peripheral edge region (2) and a recessed central region (3), used to prevent the food being turned over from falling apart. A handle (5) is attached to the part of the disc opposite the recessed region. The utensil is placed on top of the pan and then the pan is turned around so that the food drops into the utensil, and the food can either be slid gently onto a plate, or if a crust needs to be formed on both sides it can be slid gently back into the pan to cook the other side.
