PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating type magnetic recording medium having excellent smoothness of the surface of a magnetic recording layer and excellent travelling durability. SOLUTION: A smectite powder is added to the magnetic recording layer 2. The amt. of the smectite powder added is controlled to between >=0.3 pts.wt. and <=10 pts.wt. to 100 pts.wt. of the magnetic powder. Thus, the obtd. magnetic recording medium has both of high electromagnetic conversion characteristics and high durability.
