The invention concerns a control system for controlling a matrix of picture elements each comprising a cathode made of a material with low electronic affinity. Each crosspoint circuit comprises a switching device (Cti.j) associated with a cathode of a picture element and enables, by means of memory circuits (M1, M2) to connect said cathode to a current source for a time interval sufficient for all the matrix lines to be controlled and for adjusting the current conduction of the corresponding picture element. The invention is useful for controlling electronic guns and display screens.
