To monitor the concentration of nitrous oxide gas present in an operating theater, a tubular gas analyzer using infra red gas absorption is used, as a cycled cold light emitter (1). It has an inner porous tube and a pyroelectric double detector (4). The components are within a thin longitudinal tube as part of a tubular frame or fitting tube in the operating theater equipment. The monitor can be incorporated into the tubular frame containing the nitrous oxide gas bottles. The monitor measures the concentration of nitrous oxide gas present, and generates an alarm if the level is over a given threshold. The measured levels are displayed, and can be used for documentation. The patient is given a mask for the gas, and masks are envisaged with a suction system to extract released nitrous oxide gas. The monitor can be adapted to register concentrations of nitrogen monoxide in welding shops or for use by firefighters, using specific wavelengths for the substances to be detected. It can also monitor vapors escaping from fuel storage tanks or fuel pumps at petrol stations.
