Described is a communication system and a suitable method for switching between areas belonging to different switching units by allocating third subscriber characteristics (IMSI-3) and second subscriber characteristics (IMSI-VI) to a second subscriber characteristic module (SIM-VI) and whereby third subscriber characteristics (IMSI-3) and second subscriber characteristics (IMSI-VI) have a common profile.
