A process for producing a 2-ethyl-1,4,5,8-dimethano-1,2,3,4,4a,5,8,8a-octahydronaphthalene composition in which the total content of two specific cyclopentadiene trimers is 100 to 5,000 ppm, which comprises reacting cyclopentadiene and/or dicyclopentadiene with 5-ethyl-2-norbornene under specific conditions. By using the composition as a feed material for various polymerizations, homogeneous and transparent polymers containing no gel can be obtained.
