A second relative movment is superposed on the relative movement of tool (7) and work (6) during grinding and contours the inside surface of the work (6) relative the section of the work so as to follow the deformation caused by the clamping jaw forces exerted on the chucked work. This superposed movement is performed by the grinding tool (7), and the work comprises a thin-wall ring gear and the superposed movement derives from an adjuster (8) so controled that the contact line (V) between tool and work follows the deformation of the chucked work. The adjuster is formed from a cross drive whose movements (Y,Z) lie in a plane normal to the longitudinal axis of the work.
