A thermal transfer recording sheet comprising a uniaxially stretched film substrate layer (A) containing 40 to 85 wt.% of a thermoplastic resin and 60 to 15 wt.% of an inorganic or organic fine powder and, placed on at least one side thereof, at least one uniaxially stretched film surface layer (B) containing 30 to 90 wt.% of a thermoplastic resin and 70 to 10 wt.% of an inorganic fine powder obtained by modifying the surface of a powder having a mean particle diameter not greater than that of the inorganic or organic fine powder in the aforementioned uniaxially stretched film substrate layer (A) so as to be hydrophilic. This thermal transfer recording sheet is excellent in suitability for color thermal transfer color recording and for thermal transfer bar-code recording in an atmosphere of a high temperature and a high humidity and shows excellent contact with an ink.
