Turbocharged IC engine with selected cylinders switched off, has exhaust driven turbocharger for constantly working cylinders and mechanical turbocharger for selected cylinders

An IC engine with two groups of turbocharged cylinders has a first group (2) working constantly and supplied via a turbocharger (4) driven off the exhaust duct (8) from this group. A second group (3) of cylinders is operated selectively, i.e. it can be switched off when only moderate and low torque are required. A mechanically driven turbocharger (11) supplies the second group of cylinders and is powered by a mechanical drive (12) from the first group and via a clutch (13) to isolate the turbocharger when not required. The design can be applied to single block and double block engines.
