<p>An electret that includes a surface modified polymeric article having surfac e fluorination produced by fluorinating the polymeric article. The electret ma y be a nonwoven fibrous web that comprises electrically charged microfibers where the web has fluorination that includes CF3 and CF2 groups on the surfa ce of the fibers at a CF3:CF2 ratio of at least 0.45.</p>
