A belt conveyor for plate-shaped workpieces e.g. metal sheets and billets has a transport belt (2) running around a transport belt body (1), on whose outside facing away from the body in the transport direction, suction cups are provided. The distance of an opening plane of the rotationally symmetric suction cups can be changed in relation to the transport belt. Each suction cup can be extended or retracted in a recess (4) provided on the outside. In the bottom of the recess is provided at least one hole (5,6) penetrating the transport belt.
