Use of a specific amylase in a laundry detergent composition selected from: (a) ~a-amylase (AA) characterised by having a specificity activity /- 25% higher than the specific activity of "Termamyl" (RTM) at a temperature range of 25-55 deg C and at a pH value in the range of 8-10, measured by the "Phadebas" (RTM) AA activity assay and/or (b) AA as in (a) comprising an amino acid sequence given in the specification or an AA being /- 80% homologous with an amino acid sequence given in the specification and/or (c) AA as in (a) comprising an amino acid sequence given in the specification or an AA being /- 80% homologous with an amino acid sequence given in the specification and/or (d) AA as in (a) comprising the following amino sequence in the N-terminal: His-His-Asn-Gly-Thr-Asn-Gly-Thr-Met-Met-Gln-Tyr-Phe-Glu-Trp-Tyr-Leu-Pro-Asn-Asp (III) or an AA being /- 80% homolgous with (III) in the N-terminal and/or (e) AA as in (a) - (d) where the AA is obtainable from an alkalophilic Bacillus species and/or (f) AA as in (e) where the amylase is obtainable from any of strains NCIB 12289, NCIB 12512, NCIB 12513 and DSM 935 and/or (g) AA showing positive immunological cross-reactivity with antibodies raised against an AA having an amino acid sequence corresponding respectively to sequences given in the specification or (III) and/or (h) a variant of a parent AA, which parent AA: (i) has one of the amino acid sequences shown in sequences given in the specification, or (ii) displays /- 80% homology with /- 1 of the amino acid sequences, and/or displays immunological cross-reactivity with an antibody raised against an AA having one of the amino acid sequences, and/or is encoded by a DNA sequence which hybridises with the same probe as a DNA sequence encoding an AA having one of the amino acid sequences in which variants: (i') /- 1 amino acid residue of the parent AA has been deleted and/or replaced by a different amino acid residue and/or (ii') /- 1 amino acid has been inserted relative to the parent AA; the variant having an AA activity and exhibiting /- 1 of the following properties relative to the parent AA: increased thermostability, increased stability toward oxidation, reduced calcium ion dependency, increased stability and/or ~a-amylolytic activity at neutral to relatively high pH value s, increased ~a-amylolytic activity at relatively high temperature and increase or decrease of the isoelectric point (pI) so as to better match the pI value for AA variant to the pH of the medium; to provide effective cleaning and whitening of dingy fabrics. |
