The ventilation device comprises a base (1) and a tubular post (4) with a covering hood (9) mounted on top of the post. The hood contains a multi-speed DC fan (11) enclosed within a cage-like supporting head (10) that has a peripherally attached protective wire gauze. A rechargeable battery is accommodated in the base and the hood contains an ultraviolet radiation insect killer. Power can be augmented by solar cells or the device can be entirely mains powered. The sunshade canopy is attached to the hood and can be either folding or fixed.
