PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain liquid crystal compounds having tetrahydropyran-diyl group and a specific ring in the skeletal structure, having a large absolute negative dielectric anisotropy value exhibiting low viscosity, having controlled optical anisotropy, a high specific resistance value, a high voltage retention, and stable to heat and ultraviolet radiation. SOLUTION: The new liquid crystal compounds of formula II [R1, Y1 are each a 1 to 20C alkyl, H, a halogen or the like; X1 to X4 are a single bond, -(CH2)2-, -CH=CH-, -C≡C-, -COO- or the like; ring A1 to A5 are each a trans- cyclohexane-1,4-diyl, at least one ring in the formula I or the like is tetrahydropyran-2,5-diyl; a1 to a5 are each 0 or 1 and a1+a2+a3+a4+a5>=2] or the like, having tetrahydropyran-2,5-diyl group and the ring of formula I (W1, W2 is F or Cl) in the skeletal structure, expresses various display systems such as vertical orienting system, in-plane switching system, thin film transistor, twisted nematic, super-twisted nematic or the like.
