PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance knocking resistance by completing normal flame propagation before end gas reaches spontaneous firing, even when an electrode of a spark plug is arranged adjacent to a peripheral edge part of a combustion chamber. SOLUTION: A squish region 17 is provided between a ceiling surface peripheral edge part of a combustion chamber 6 and a top surface peripheral edge part of a piston 5. A squish flow F of mixture jetted from a section 17f the furthest from an electrode 12a of a spark plug 12 in this squish region 17 is directed toward the electrode 12a. The squish flow F collides against an outer surface of a flame 18 generated in the electrode 12a to be propagated and pressurization of end gas by the flame 18 is delayed.
