PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a thermoplastic resin foam in a high foaming magnification excellent in the compression resistance, having dimensional stability and lightweightness. SOLUTION: A foamable sheetlike body is a mixture of 100 pts.wt. of resin composition obtained by mixing 0.5-50 wt.% fibrillar liquid crystal resin with 50-99.5 wt.% thermoplastic resin, 0.5-30 pts.wt. of heat decomposition-type foaming agent. A platelike body is laminated on both faces of the foamable sheetlike body and the gap between the two pieces of the platelike bodies is increased so that the fibrillar liquid crystal resin is oriented in the thickness direction, while the foamable sheetlike body is foamed above the melt temperature of the thermoplastic resin and the decomposition temperature of the heat decomposition-type foaming agent and below the transition temperature of a liquid crystal resin.
