PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method by which sludge is furnt to ashes with only a simple treatment and phosphorus in sludge is recovered. SOLUTION: Organic sludge containing phosphorus is dehydrated, dried and charged into a closed type heating furnace 12 at a first stage to heat the sludge and carbonize the organic matters in the sludge, then the treated product is charged into a closed type heating furnace 13 at a second stage to heat the product, and the phosphorus in the treating product is diffused in a form of elemental phosphorus and the exhaust gas containing the diffused elemental phosphorus is introduced into a condenser 22 to be brought into contact with water and the elemental phosphorus is condensed and collected.
