PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a spindle-like or spherical alkali aluminum sulfate hydroxide having a specific chemical composition and a crystal structure expressed by a specified X-ray diffraction pattern, substantially insoluble in water, having specific 5% aqueous suspension pH, a BET specific surface area, and a moisture content, comprising substantially independent crystal particles each having a spindle-like or spherical constant shape particle structure, and useful as a compounding agent for resins, etc., to improve the performances of the resins, etc. SOLUTION: This aluminum sulfate hydroxide is substantially expressed by the formula: MAl3(SO4)2(OH)6 (M is an alkali metal or ammonium group). In the crystal structure of the aluminum sulfate hydroxide, a surface index and a relative intensity are expressed by prescribed values, respectively, based on each surface distance value within 5.72-1.49. The strongest line of X-ray diffraction peaks has, for example, a surface distance of 2.99×10-10 m, a relative intensity of 100, and a surface index of 113. The aluminum sulfate hydroxide further has 5% aqueous suspension pH 4-7, a BET specific surface area of <=30 m2/g and a moisture content <=10%, especially <=5%, at 25 deg.C and 90% RH.
