PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To correct injection timing at the time of stratified combustion of a direct injection gasoline engine to optimum timing that can avoid fuel spill from a recessed part (bowl part) of a piston crown face while suppressing fuel adhesion to the piston crown face. SOLUTION: A combustion periodθ50-90 equivalent to a period of 50%-90% of a mass combustion rate is obtained, and the combustion periodθ50-90 is compared with the reference valueθ(reference) (S6). When there is deviation of specified value or more between the latest combustion periodθ50-90 (θ(present)) and the reference valueθ(reference), injection timing is corrected. When the latest combustion periodθ50-90 is larger than the reference valueθ(reference), the advance correction of injection timing is repeated until the decrease change of the combustion periodθ50-90 stops (S10). When the latest combustion periodθ50-90 is the reference valueθ(reference) or less, the delay correction of injection timing is repeated unit an increase in the combustion periodθ50-90 starts (S12).
