The bags are stored in various compartments within a ship, e.g. engine room, holds, living accommodation, etc. When an emergency occurs which may allow the ship to sink, e.g. a breach in the hull, compressed gas is blown through the liquid material, e.g. a polystyrene mixture, which foams and sets to form blocks of closed cell material. The foamed material has a much lower specific gravity than water and thus gives positive buoyancy.
