PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily produce a high density cerium-base oxide sintered compact having >=99% relative density by a method effective also as an industrial method with good reproducibility at a low cost. SOLUTION: An oxide mixture contg. 50-99.9 mol.% cerium oxide having 1.6-16 m2/g BET specific surface area and a particle size distribution in which D50 is 0.1-1μm and D90/D10 is <=5 when the particle diameters of cumulative 10%, cumulative 50% and cumulative 90& from the fine particle side of the cumulative particle size distribution of the cerium oxide are represented by D10, D50 and D90, respectively, and 0.1-50 mol.% one or more oxides selected from oxides of rare earth metals other than cerium, magnesium oxide, etc., is compacted and sintered in the temp. range of 1,500-1,600 deg.C to produce the objective cerium-base oxide sintered compact.
