PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a flame-retarding agent composed of a mixture of specific components such as quartz and mullite, having particle diameters falling within a specific range and containing SiO2 as a base to be added to a coating material, etc. to impart the material with flame-retardancy. SOLUTION: The objective flame-retarding agent having particle diameters falling within the range of 200-400 mesh contains preferably 22 wt.% of quartz, preferably 16 wt.% of mullite, preferably 18 wt.% of magnesite, preferably 20 wt.% of zircon, baddeleyite and talc, preferably 4 wt.% of vermiculite, preferably 3 wt.% of precipitated calcium carbonate and preferably further diaspore, andalusite.cyanite and zinc oxide.
