PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the subject aromatic compound in a mild reaction condition by reacting a ketone or an aldehyde, or an acetal or a ketal with an aromatic compound in the presence of a specific silicon compound and using a lewis acid as a catalyst. SOLUTION: This method for producing a substituted aromatic compound is to obtain an objective compound of formula IV [Ar is a (substituted) aromatic ring] by reacting a ketone or an aldehyde of formula II [R1 is a (substituted) lower alkyl, a lower alkenyl or an aromatic ring; R2 is H, a (substituted) lower alkyl, a lower alkenyl or an aromatic ring, or R1 or R2 is allowed to form a ring by bonding with a single bond] or an acetal or a ketal of formula III (R3 is allowed to form a ring by bonding with a single bond each other) with an aromatic compound (e.g. benzene) in the presence of a silicon compound of formula I [R, R', R" are each a (substituted) phenyl, a lower alkyl or chlorine] (e.g.; dimethylchlorosilane) using a lewis acid [e.g.; an indium compound such as tris(trifluoroacetic acid)indium] as a catalyst. |
