PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To hold a bar in the state of applying tension to chains during the work of clamping the bar against a chain saw housing. SOLUTION: A guide bar mounted on the studs 22, 24 of a chain saw has a slender bar main body having an axially extending cavity. The rear end portion 50 of a shaft 42 slidable within the cavity is engaged with the studs and has backwardly projecting fingers 56 having an inner edge and an outer edge 59. When the shaft having a crack 52 in its longitudinal direction is moved backward in such a way as to be pressed against the studs, the inner edge is engaged with the studs to open the crack and to widen the fingers and the bar main body is moved relatively forward to apply tension to chains therearound. When the fingers are widened, the outer edge tapered is engaged with the edge 36t of the tapered cavity whereby the relative positions of the studs, shaft, and bar main body are fixed.
