PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce silica particles having voids suitable as a filler for papermaking, etc., to provide a method for producing the silica particles and to obtain an internally added paper containing the silica particles as a filler. SOLUTION: The silica particles have 4.0-6.0 cc/g cumulative volume of pares having <=105Ådiameter, >=2.0 cc/g cumulative volume of pares having a pore diameter within the range of 6,000 to 8×104Åand further >=1.0 cc/g cumulative volume of pores having a pare diameter within the range of 200-2,000Å, 300-500 mL/100 g oil absorption volume and <=0.1 g/mL bulk specific gravity. The method for producing the silica particles having the pore characteristics comprises depositing silica from an aqueous solution of an alkali silicate so as to take in acid-soluble primary particles and then dissolving the primary particles with an acid.
