PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a carboxylic acid derivative useful as a pharmaceutical such as a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory agent or an antibiotic in high yield under mild conditions without using a strong oxidizing agent by reacting a specific malononitrile derivative in a solvent using an alkaline aqueous solution. SOLUTION: A malononitrile derivative of formula I [R1 and R2 are each H, a (substituted) alkyl or a (substituted) aryl] [e.g. (5-methyl-4-(1,1,2,2- tetramethyl-1-silanopropoxy)-5-phenoxyhexyl)methane-1,1-dicarbonitrile] is made to react by using an alkaline aqueous solution such as an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide in a solvent that is, a mixed solvent of water and methanol, or the like preferably at 20-80 deg.C for about 3-24 hr to obtain the objective compound of formula II [e.g. 6-methyl-5-(1,1,2,2-tetramethyl-1-silanopropoxy)-6- phenoxyheptanoic acid].
