PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To expand the range of the low-temperature combustion by using a novel combustion system. SOLUTION: A first combustion in which the EGR gas quantity in a combustion chamber 5 is larger than the EGR gas quantity where the soot generation reaches its peak, and little soot is generated, and a second combustion in which the EGR gas quantity in the combustion chamber 5 is smaller than the EGR gas quantity where the soot generation reaches its peak, is selectively effected. An exhaust turbocharger 15 is arranged in an engine intake passage, and the exhaust gas discharged from an exhaust turbine 23 is re-circulated in air intake pipe 17 of a compressor 16 through an EGR passage 29. |
