PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively prevent corrosion of a metal material in an environment where microbes are present by allowing a reducing agent to be present in the environment so as to prevent or recover the environmental changes caused by the activity of the microbes in the environment. SOLUTION: The microbial corrosion of a metal material is affected not only by the activity of microbes but by the products produced by the microbial activity. It is supposed that corrosion of stainless steels in an underwater environment where microbes are present is caused by anodic polarization with abnormally enhanced corrosion potential to increase the local corrosion susceptibility. By the investigation of the influences of iron oxidizing bacteria frequently detected in the corroded part on the corrosion mechanism, it is found that a product functioning as an oxidizing agent due to the activity of microbes is produced on the material surface during the anodic polarization of the corrosion potential and this product affects the corrosion mechanism of the material. Therefore, by adding a reducing agent such as L-ascorbic acid to the environment, corrosion of a metal material by microbes can be effectively inhibited.
