PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance printing quality at the boundary of the edge of a character and a background at a time of the printing of printing data obtained by superposing a character pattern on a background pattern. SOLUTION: The dot pattern of a character 'AB' to be printed is stored in a character memory and the dot pattern of a background (lattice pattern) to be printed is stored in a background memory as the background of the pattern 'AB' and, at a time of the drawing-in feed of recording paper A in an A-direction, the heating element of a thermal head is driven in printing pulse width shorter than usual one at every one dot line from the head with respect to the dot pattern of the background to perform printing in low density in matching relation to the drawing-in feed of the recording paper P at every one dot width and, at a time of the discharge feed of the recording paper P in a B-direction thereafter, the heating element of the thermal head is driven in usual printing pulse width at every one dot line from the last with respect to the dot pattern of the character to perform high density printing in matching relation to the discharge feed of the recording paper P at every one dot width.
