PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a poly-α-olefin having high stereoregularity and flowability by conductingα-olefin polymn. in the presence of a solid catalyst component which is obtd. by treating a solid component with a compd. contg. Br or I and subjecting thus treated solid component to prepolymn. in the presence of an organoaluminum compd., and a metal halide. SOLUTION: The prepolymn. is conducted in the presence of a solid catalyst component prepd. by treating a solid component comprising Mg, Ti, a halogen, and an electron-donating compd. with Br2, I2, CBr4, CI4, an alkyl bromide, or the like or with a compd. of formula 1: MetRx (wherein Met is Mg, B, Al, Ga, or the like; R is Br, I, or the like; and X is the valency of Met); and an organoaluminum compd. of formula 2: (Rk)rAl(Y)3-r (wherein Rk is an alkyl or aryl; Y is H or alkoxy; and 0<=r<=3) or an organoaluminum compd. having at least two Al atoms bonded via oxygen or nitrogen atoms. A catalyst comprising the resultant catalyst component, an organoaluminum compd. of formula 2, an alkylalkoxysilane compd., and a compd. of formula 1 is used.
