PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily change the mode of every cylinder by mounting a carrier for operating and stopping a valve in such manner that a valve opening means is made inoperable in a passive position and the valve opening means is made operable in an active position in at least one rotating position of a cam shaft. SOLUTION: The cylindrical fixed guides 6S, 6E mounted on the intake and exhaust sides, a power controller 11 and a ratio controller 28 are supported by a body mounted on a cylinder head of an engine. The shifters are respectively fitted inside of the fixed guides 6S, 6E, and the cylindrical carriers 17S, 17E are fitted on the outside of the same in such manner that they are movable in the axial direction of the fixed guides 6S, 6E. An idling cylinder is activated in accompany with the stepping of an acceleration pedal, and then the first and second boosting cylinders are successively activated by the successive stepping of the pedal, to finally increase the output of the both boosting cylinders to the rated output position.
