PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a resin excellent in flocculating action and antimicrobial performance by incorporating a copolymer of an N-subtd. (meth)acrylamide and a phosphonium salt monomer having a (meth)acrylic group into the same. SOLUTION: An N-alkyl(meth)acrylamide of formula I and a phosphonium salt monomer of formula II having a (meth)acrylic group are copolymerized. In the formulas, R1 is H or CH3; R2 and R3 are each H or a 1-6C linear or branched alkyl; R4, R5, and R6 are each a 1-8C linear or branched alkyl; X is an anion; Y is H, a lower alkyl, or aryl; and Z is alkylene. The phosphorus content in the copolymer is pref. 0.1-2 wt.%. Examples of the monomer of formula I are N-isopropyl(meth)acrylamide and N-n-propyl(meth)acrylamide. An example of the monomer of formula II is (methacryloyloxymethl) triethylphosphonium chloride.
