The upper roller, which forms a nip with a lower rotatably drivable longitudinally reciprocable roller, is carried in a U-shaped yoke pivotally mounted at cam end on stub shafts so that pivoting of the yoke moves the upper roller towards or away from the lower roller. Pref. the yoke is spring biassed to move in one direction against the action of a dash-pot damped counterbalance weight. One stub-shaft may be formed eccentrically so that rotation of the stub-shaft varies the angle between the roller axes. The force exerted by the nip is accurately controlled.
